Every September, a familiar ritual plays out at our local coffee counters across Greensburg. As the morning air turns crisp, the menu boards shift, and suddenly, the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) takes center stage. To some, the PSL is a welcome harbinger of autumn. To others, it is a trendy, overly sweet distraction from an honest, piping-hot cup of black coffee.
A simple coffee menu board got me thinking about something bigger: how much can change while the things that matter most remain the same.
For decades, black drip coffee was the undisputed standard in every diner, gas station, and kitchen table in town. It was straightforward, consistent, and uncomplicated. You poured it from a glass pot, added sugar or cream if you were feeling adventurous, and got down to business. It anchored early morning chats about the weather, crop yields, and local news.
Today, however, the landscape looks a little different. Specialty drinks, oat milk, cold brews, and seasonal syrups have swept in as the new wave. Walk into any cafe around Greensburg, or on the Square, on a Tuesday morning, and you’ll see traditional drip coffee sharing the counter with whipped-cream-topped lattes spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
It is easy to look at these shifts and feel a pang of nostalgia for the simpler way things used to be. Change, whether on a coffee menu or in our hometown, often brings a sense of hesitation. When new trends take hold, it can feel like the traditions that built our community are being quietly pushed to the wayside.
But progress and tradition do not have to be enemies. The rise of the Pumpkin Spice Latte hasn't erased black coffee; it has simply expanded the table.
Our community functions in much the same way. Greensburg grows, adapts, and introduces new ideas while honoring the steady foundation that got us here. We welcome new businesses, modern infrastructure, and fresh faces, even as we preserve the historic charm and core values that define us. The introduction of something new does not diminish what came before; it offers new ways for neighbors to gather, connect, and thrive.
Everyone has their personal preference. Some of us will always stick to a classic black roast—no frills, no fuss. Others look forward to the seasonal excitement of a PSL all year long. The beauty of a growing, vibrant community is that there is room for both at the exact same counter.
Not all change is bad. Sometimes, opening ourselves up to new flavors, and new perspectives, simply enriches the place we call home.
